Goonies never say die! Our latest escapade took us to the charming coastal town of Astoria, a place with a rich history and cinematic allure. One of our must-see destinations was the iconic Goondocks, the neighborhood that inspired director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg of "The Goonies."
Our RV park this time was Seaside/Astoria KOA, and it was fantastic! Nestled perfectly for our adventure, this campground had everything we needed and more. From its cozy spots to its easy access to all the must-see sites, it was the ideal home base. Whether we were roasting marshmallows at the campfire, or just soaking in the beautiful surroundings, this KOA was a hit!
On our Goondocks visit to Astoria, we parked at the Safeway on 35th Street and made our way to 37th Street, eager to see the white house with umber trim perched on the hill. Although we missed Mouth’s house, the nostalgia was palpable. The street in front of the house remains steep and gravelly, though the picket fence has shrunk a bit over the years, leaving no gate for “Truffle Shuffles.”
Astoria has stolen my heart. The picturesque houses, charming downtown, and tranquil river walk make it a place I'd love to revisit. We also explored Fort Stevens State Park, where we marveled at the remains of a beached ship from the early 19th century, now reduced to just its supportive frame. The history buff in me was thoroughly captivated!
Next, we headed to Cannon Beach to see the famous Haystack Rock. However, our timing was less than ideal as it was both a weekend and Father’s Day. Parking was a nightmare, so we ventured to Arcadia Park just south of the city. At low tide, the beach was stunning, providing the perfect backdrop for a relaxing afternoon.
Back at our campsite, I used my oven for the first time to make garlic toast – and I’m proud to report that nothing burned! It’s the little victories, right?
Most of the jetty near our campground is under construction, which added a bit of unexpected adventure finding our way to the beach. Annabelle took a quick dip in the Columbia River, Cooper played hide and seek in the weeds and Ginger loved running on the sand.
From the nostalgic Goondocks to the serene beaches, this trip was a delightful mix of memories and new experiences. If you ever find yourself in Astoria, be sure to soak in all the charm and history it has to offer.
The next stop is Mount St. Helens.
